Study from birth

A pilot study of the people born in 1946 is underway in Manchester. These 60 year olds have been followed from birth and their lifetime exposure to risk factors has been documented.

They are now being assessed for health in ageing, incorporating measures of:

  • cardiovascular health
  • bone and muscle health
  • cognitive function
  • genetics.

The cardiovascular measures are being co-ordinated in the Vascular Physiology Unit at Great Ormond Street and include:

  • electrocardiogram
  • echocardiogram
  • ultrasound of the carotid arteries
  • pulse wave velocity
  • heart rate variability

They are now planning to extend the study into four other centres around the UK.
